The World Literally At Your Finger Tips.
The Digital Age.
“Steve Jobs was the greatest inventor since Thomas Edison. He put the world at our fingertips.”
– Steven Spielberg
In the world where the New Economy grows at a rapidly unstoppable speed, where digital transformation happens right now right here, millions of people have immediate access to any very fast travelling information on a daily basis. The digital age revolutionize every aspect of our life.
Nearly half of the world population is shopping, learning, sharing, watching, exchanging ideas or simply talking via the internet as well as influencing governments, inspiring positive change and raising awareness. Everyone has a voice, something truly profound.
“What the digital age has offered us, in terms of connectivity and transparency, is that all of these people from weird places in the world are all talking to each other, at four in the morning, and are sharing ideas. There’s more openness that has ever been known, so that’s a good thing”
– Jodie Foster
I belong to so called Generation X. Growing up in Poland in the 80’s I had my first contact with a computer at about 17 or so. The college I went to had maybe 5 or 6 of them then, chunky and slow. We had a computer lesson once a week, with four or five of us on one machine. We learned DOS which didn’t look very attractive at all and seemed very dry.
I owned my first ever PC at the age 24. I lived then in Germany where I went to University. I worked hard to be able to afford it and I had to learn slowly, step by step how to use it all by myself.
I also remember times when people and only very very few of my friends started using mobile phones. I had my first one probably only about ten years ago.
And now, I can’t imagine my life without a laptop. I use it every day. I listen to music on Spotify or digital radio. I usually buy whatever we need online. I keep in touch via e-mails or Facebook. I do online banking and as we do not have/watch a regular TV, I watch streaming movies or news.
“Computing is not about computers any more. It is about living.”
– Nicholas Negroponte
The Digital Economy transforms our world rapidly. To make easier to understand the true impact of it, look at only these few points taken from a report pulled together by German company called SAP (Systems, Applications & Products in Data Processing):
- by 2019 approximately one-quarter of the U.S. workers will be self employed,
- about 50% of all the jobs on the planet – 2 billion – will disappear by 2030,
- between 2015 and 2030 robot use will grow 2000%,
- 78% of employees wish to work for a digital leader or digitally advanced company,
- the total worth of The Internet of Things technology may reach $6.2 trillion by 2025,
- 80% of businesses and products will be eliminated, reinvented or digitalized by 2020,
- 200 billion devices will be connected on The Internet of Things by 2020.
“Everyone here has the sense
that right now is one of those moments
when we are influencing the future”
– Steve Jobs
On February 2011 The Time Magazine published an article by Lev Grossman:
2045: The Year Man Becomes Immortal
The article talks about the accelerating pace of change and exponential growth in computing power which will lead to the Singularity.
It makes me think about a movie I watched few weeks ago called Ex-Machina – engaging and somehow beautiful British science-fiction.
With understanding the digital economy a whole new world opened up for me. Until a few months ago I wouldn’t even dream about earning a sustainable income online or calling myself a digital entrepreneur, considering my very basic computer knowledge.
But also a few months ago however it all changed. I came across an online digital education platform. Becoming a member of a exclusive community and a student of this revolutionary digital system made me see the world through a different lens. It made me shift my thinking and stop holding on to the past. It helped me recognize the opportunity for securing my future and the future of my family. Provided me with an education and skills set which I will keep for life.
when you have the entire world
at your fingertips?”
